UOW recognised among world’s top universities for sustainability impact
UOW's sustainability efforts recognised as it rises to 31st place globally and 7th in Australia in times higher education impact rankings 2025
The ¾«¶«´«Ã½ of ¾«¶«´«Ã½ (UOW) has further cemented its reputation as a global leader in sustainability, climbing to equal 31st place worldwide in the 2025 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, a 13-place improvement from last year.
The result is an affirmation of UOW’s commitment to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The 2025 THE Impact Rankings assessed more than 2,300 universities against the 17 United Nations SDGS, measuring performance in areas such as sustainability, social equity, innovation, and partnerships. In 2025, a record 2,318 institutions participated – an 18 percent increase from 2024 – making UOW’s achievement even more noteworthy.
Vice-Chancellor and President Professor G.Q. Max Lu said said the result reflects the ¾«¶«´«Ã½’s strong commitment to delivering positive change through research, education and meaningful partnerships.
“These results speak to the real impact our staff, students and partners are making both here in our communities and around the world, contributing significantly to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals,” Professor Lu said.
“To be recognised among the world’s top institutions for sustainability reflects not just our ambition in teaching and research, but the values we share as a university community — one that is committed to equity, inclusion and global responsibility.”
From addressing food insecurity and improving water quality to advancing to medical treatments and environmental resilience, UOW’s work is grounded with real challenges and delivered through global partnerships.
Each university’s total score is calculated by combining its score in SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals with its best three results on the remaining 16 SDGs.
UOW’s result was based on its scores for SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation (in which it ranked 10th globally), SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities (11th), SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure (71st) and for SDG 17 (equal 64th).
Across the board, UOW ranked in the global top 25 in three SDGs, top 50 in six SDGs and in the top 100 in fourteen. Being ranked in the top 25 for SDGs 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and 13 (Climate Action) demonstrates exceptional commitment and impact towards global sustainability goals.
