Student spotlight: Sanjoli Sharma

Meet Sanjoli, an ambitious student from India who is currently pursuing a double degree—Masters of Project Management and Masters of Marketing at the Sydney Business School, ¾«¶«´«Ã½ of ¾«¶«´«Ã½, based at the Sydney CBD campus. With a solid academic foundation in commerce, gained through her Bachelor of Commerce in India, Sanjoli developed a strong interest in business and finance, which has shaped her postgraduate journey.

Blending two disciplines for broader horizons

My academic journey has been one of exploration and growth. Starting with a commerce background, I became increasingly interested in how businesses deliver value—leading me to marketing. Simultaneously, I realised how crucial project management is across all sectors, especially in today’s dynamic work environment. Studying both has given me a well-rounded understanding of managing teams and interpreting consumer behaviour.

Adapting abroad: A defining challenge

A major turning point was moving to Australia. Adapting to a new academic culture while adjusting to life in a different country was overwhelming at first. I struggled to keep up with assignments and expectations during the early weeks. But pushing through that phase taught me resilience and helped me grow more independent and confident in myself.

Finding community at UOW

What I’ve enjoyed most about student life at UOW is the strong sense of community. Whether it’s through collaborative group projects, student-led events, or the support services, the environment is welcoming and inclusive. It’s inspiring to be part of a global student body where everyone is open to learning and connecting.

Balancing study, work, and self-care

Managing life as an international student requires good planning. I use a weekly planner to stay on top of my studies, part-time work, and make time for self-care. Staying connected with my loved ones back home also keeps me grounded. It’s about finding your own rhythm and being gentle with yourself, especially during challenging times.

A coffee chat that turned into lifelong friendship

One of my favourite memories was during a casual university-organised coffee catch-up. I ended up meeting students from all over the world, and we instantly clicked. That chance meeting turned into a supportive study group—and eventually, a close circle of friends. It’s a great reminder of how spontaneous moments can turn into something special.

Looking ahead: merging Project Management with Marketing

My career goal is to work in a role that combines both marketing and project management. I’m particularly interested in brand or product management—positions that allow me to plan, coordinate, and bring creative ideas to life. In the long run, I hope to take on strategic leadership roles in a global organisation.

Advice to fellow students: embrace the journey

If I could share one message, it would be this: don’t fear challenges—they’re often the biggest opportunities for growth. Don’t hesitate to seek support when you need it, and avoid comparing your journey to others. Stay curious, stay grounded, and most importantly, enjoy the ride. You’ll be proud of how far you’ve come.
