US politics and President Donald Trump
Professor Markus Wagner can talk about US President Donald Trump, US politics, constitutional law and trade tariffs. is an internationally recognised expert in international economic law and governance, international peace and security, as well as US and Australian constitutional law. He is the Director of the Transnational Law and Policy Centre at UOW.
Sustainable Gastronomy Day – Wednesday 18 June
Professor Karen Charlton is available to talk about Sustainable Gastronomy Day (Wednesday 18 June). A leading expert in nutrition and food security, Professor Charlton is passionate about creating sustainable global diets and improving food systems. Her work explores the intersection of nutrition science, sustainability, and public health. is a research dietician in the School of Medical, Indigenous and Health Sciences.
World Refugee Day – Friday 20 June
Professor Phil Orchard can discuss World Refugee Day (Friday 20 June). He is an expert in international relations, refugee policy, forced migration and war-affected civilians. research includes examining global refugee governance and the rights of internally displaced persons. He is a Professor of International Relations in the School of Humanities and Social Inquiry, and Co-Director of the UOW Future of Rights Centre.
High Seas Treaty
Dr Sarah Lothian is available to discuss the historic High Seas Treaty and its implications for ocean conservation. In an article for Dr Lothian says the speed with which the High Seas Treaty is moving speaks to the urgency of the moment. She writes:
Researchers and authorities have warned that the world’s oceans are now in deep trouble, threatened by climate change effects, overfishing, plastic pollution and other human-caused issues.
is a Lecturer and Academic Barrister at the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS) at UOW. Dr Lothian is also the author of Marine Conservation and International Law: Legal Instruments for Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction. She is a barrister at the New South Wales Bar.
Emperor penguins in peril as sea ice melts
Honorary Senior Fellow Dana Bergstrom can talk about the alarming decline in Antarctic sea ice and its impact on emperor penguin populations. In an article for Professor Bergstrom says climate change is upending the penguins’ carefully tuned biological cycles. She reveals that the crucial sea ice emperor penguins depend on is melting too early and “plunging the chicks from some colonies into the sea before they are fully fledged”.
Professor Bergstrom is an applied ecologist with decades of experience in polar research who has studied the effects of climate change on Antarctic ecosystems. She is an Honorary Senior Fellow in the School of Science and a former Principal Research Scientist with the Australian Antarctic Division.
